In the middle of a stupid controversy about minarets...

... spreading from Switzerland.
Well, let's have a look instead to the good side,
the wonderful Paris Great
Mosque - minaret included - and, a few steps away, to the Arab World
Institute...
[Check this video podcast in 2 parts, forecasted by The Guardian].

The Grand Mosque of Paris is an old idea from the time of the colonial France.
Since 1533 - at the time of King Francois I and Caliph Suleiman the Magnificent,
they wanted to build a mosque in Paris for Muslim people.
It's a long story and you had to wait until 1917, when they created an association
in Algiers - at that time Algeria was part of the French territory.
They started to build it in 1922, and it was opened in 1926, so it's an old mosque,
more than 80 years old, and it's a bit of a symbol of French Islam (more).

The Institut du Monde Arabe is a centre for Arabic arts and culture.
The building was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and intended to be
a dialogue between cultures. It reflects a modern interpretation of traditional
Islamic art and architecture

Take a walk on the new passerelle Müller !

The Müller passerelle (footbridge) has been recently restored and reopened
on June 12,
this year.
It connects Ivry's center to Ivry's harbour, spanning the underlying
railways and
linking together the rue Ledru Rollin with the rue Jules Vanzuppe, right in the
artists-
workshops' area.

> To undertake this project, the Ivry Municipal Authority, decided to enlist
the aid of experts : the DVVD, an architectural and engineering consultant,
Baudin Châteauneuf for the metal framework and the CSTB.

> Read the full article edited on the CSTB's site, focusing on the more interesting
details
of this structure.

Here below, the old passerelle and the new one in its refection phase...

... as now, in September 2008.

SLIDESHOWS :

The Greater Paris of the Future.

Ten projects to be seen at Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine
- Palais de Chaillot, opening tomorrow April 30th.

Below, Jean Nouvel and Roland Castro proposals...

The idea of a Paris extending beyond the boulevard Périphérique isn't new,
but serious studies about a master plan began when :

"On 17 September 2007, French President Nicolas Sarkozy marked
the inauguration of La Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine by stating
his wish for an international
consultation on a new comprehensive
development project for Greater Paris"
.
