2013 INTERNET FREEDOM DAY

One Year Ago: Internet users around the globe started to fight back the Internet censorship law.
Pro-freedom groups both large and small created ways to show their support for an open and
uncensored web. Hundreds of thousands of people participated, and major websites like Google,
Reddit, and Tumblr joined the cause. When January 18th, 2012 rolled around, the stage was set.
___

This year, we celebrate the victory and remind Internet users everywhere that the fight
continues by declaring January 18th Internet Freedom Day.

Protect Your Internet: Kill ACTA

Because ACTA 'jacta non est' - not yet - stand up and say 'NO'!
___
After SOPA/PIPA in the US, ACTA makes its way to the EU Parliament.

[]
An open letter signed by many organizations, including Consumers International, EDRi (27 European
civil rights and privacy NGOs), the Free Software Foundation (FSF), the Electronic Frontier Foundation
(EFF), ASIC (French trade association for web 2.0 companies), and the Free Knowledge Institute (FKI),
states that "the current draft of ACTA would profoundly restrict the fundamental rights and freedoms of
European citizens, most notably the freedom of expression and communication privacy."

Paris, January 23rd, 2012
After the huge
online protests against the extremist SOPA and PIPA copyright bills
discussed in the United States, the EU Parliament starts working on their global
counterpart: ACTA, the "anti-counterfeiting trade agreement".
Citizens across Europe must push back against this illegitimate agreement bound to
undermine free speech online, access to knowledge and innovation worldwide.

Tomorrow, the EU Parliament “development” committee (DEVE) will hold its first debate
on its
draft opinion report on ACTA.

Jan 26/2012 update: The European Union and 22 of its member states signed on
Thursday 26 the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA -- a major step toward
enforcement of the copyright treaty. Eight countries, including the United States, had
signed the agreement this past fall.

Got an iPhone ? Read this...

"How to catch an iPhone thief" is a modern "detective story", strictly linked to the Internet :

Sam had his 3GS iPhone stolen just as he was leaving his plane in
Los Angeles.

Since he knew who the thief was, but knowing he couldn't accuse
someone without evidence, Sam has conducted its own investigation.

His tools to locate the thief, once this one sneaked away, had been
Google, AT&T, MobileMe, White pages and USsearch.

<> back... but you'd better follow, step by step,
Sam's survey, full of noise and furor !

Look and think about... China today.

This movie was first released on Jan 21st 2010, and was banned 2 days later on all major
Chinese video websites.

DigiCha says : ... "Google’s recent moves in China have captured global attention about
censorship and Internet controls in China, eliciting protests from inside and outside China.
But there is a much more entertaining protest about China’s web controls circulating on the
Internet :
网瘾战争 War of Internet Addiction”. It is an hour long video, “shot” almost entirely with
in-game video from World of Warcraft, satirizing the government’s attempt to “harmonize”
China’s Internet with forced installations of “Green Dam Youth Escort” and the travails of
Chinese World of Warcraft players over the last several months.
It is quite brilliant".

(greatestyang)

This video contains a lot of Chinese history and pop culture references along with a lot
of internet meme only known to Chinese since this video is targeted at the Chinese
audience only.
