An aria by Vivaldi for PaPoGris' Music Time...

... L'Olimpiade: Act II/V, aria "Siam navi all'onde algenti"
performed by Aris Christofellis as Aminta.

"Siam navi all' onde algenti
lasciate in abbandono
impetuosi venti i nostri affetti sono,
ogni diletto è scoglio,
tutta la vita un mar.

Ben qual nocchiero in noi
veglia ragion ma poi
pur dall' ondoso orgoglio
si lascia trasportar."

Recorded in Paris, February 1990.

Vivaldi wrote the Olimpiade in 1734 for the Teatro Sant'Angelo in Venice.
The libretto for Olimpiade, one of the most famous librettos of the eighteenth
century, was written by Pietro Metastasio in 1733. It has been set to music in
the same year by Antonio Caldara, then by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in 1735
and by Leonardo Leo in 1737, as well as by Vivaldi himself.

The Olimpiade was the first of Vivaldi's operas to be exhumed and reproposed
to the international public in the twentieth century.
Alfredo Casella was responsible for its modern-day revival in 1939, as part of
the Siena Musical Week

Shadows hang over Easter 2010

Today, on the front page of Le Figaro...
"Pâques: 4.000 chrétiens à la Défense"

This year, as in 2007, the Sunday following the first full moon after
the beginning of spring falls on the same day in the Gregorian calendar
(the Protestant and Catholic) and Julian (the Orthodox).

Archbishop of Paris, Mgr André Vingt-Trois, made no reference to the
scandals currently rocking the Church.
According to comments reported by the official Vatican newspaper,
L'Osservatore Romano, Archbishop Vingt-Trois denounced at the Mass of Holy Thursday,
"an offensive aimed at destabilizing the Pope and the Church through him."

- my Feline and very subjective translation:
"Pâques: 4.000 malvoyants & malentendants à la Défense...

- from Feline to English translation:

One more thought on the web for Isabelle

Isabelle Pinpaille, homeless, 15 years in the street, gone on Jan. 31/2010.
Her friend misses her as well as the others guys of her group...

Winter has been very cold this year and alcohol -
let alone the addiction,
seems to be the cheapest way to warm up. Her hearth was so tired, it simply
stopped.

A Performance for Isabelle

The group Public Commando made a beau
geste, on March 25 :

Early in the morning, they drew Isabelle's
name in giant chalk-white letters on Belleville
boulevard's central sidewalk, between the two
subway stations of Ménilmontant and Couronne,
'as an ephemeral trace of the woman' in the
neighborhood
.

Chalk-white letters, for Isabelle, as white as her last winter's snow.

The Practice of Euthanasia in Ancient Sardinia...

... or : "Su ohi de s'accabadora"*

After a phone call with a friend recalling some conversations with old people
on a topic that has always been a taboo,
I just googled two keywords :
Accabadora and mazzoccu.

- The "femina accabadora" or "agabbadora" (Span. v. acabar) is the woman
who completes the task - meaning she "helps" to pass away or, in short, a
"terminator". This character
used to be an old woman dressed in black, veiled
face - often the midwife of the village, who was called to end the agony of the
dying when it lasted too long, causing unnecessary suffering.
H
er task accomplished, she moved away. Her performance was not paid
with money, but rewarded with flour, salt, lard or other common items.

It was an ancestral form of euthanasia, practiced in cases of extreme necessity.

- The "mazzoccu" or "mazzolu" is a piece of wild olive wood, T-shaped like
a hammer
(more info here to translate).
Like all items related to the most secret rites and traditions, this tool was kept
carefully hidden, when people didn't get rid of.
However, one of them is still
visible at the Galluras ethnographic museum, in Luras.

A single sharp blow of this instrument on the temporal bone was supposed
to end the agony
, though sometimes choking with a hand or a pillow was
enough to stop a weak breath of life
. The accabadora's performance was
so fast it appeared to be painless...

The latest reported activities of the Accabadora
would have occurred in Luras (1929) and in
Orgosolo (1952)
, although someone believes
that the last case
would be as more recent as
in 2003
.

The Luras case is certainly emblematic : when
a 70 years old man passed away - with some
help from such a black angel,
the local police
and prosecutor were unanimous in reporting
the act to a humanitarian context, so the woman wasn't convicted and the
case was filed.

[luoghimisteriosi]

Infos gathered thanks to :
- Contusu.it
- Galluras.it
- A. Satta.pdf

Alberto La Marmora and William Henry Smith were the first to report this primitive
practice of euthanasia in Sardinia in their travel journals, in the early 19th century.
